The 5-Day Imperial Cities Tour is designed for travelers who want to immerse themselves in Morocco’s millennia-old history without taking on the long journey to the Sahara. A comfortable, private itinerary, guided by Italian-speaking drivers, covering the country’s four historic capitals — Marrakech, Rabat, Meknes and Fes — plus a stop in the modern city of Casablanca.

Unlike a coach tour packed with other passengers, this itinerary is entirely private: the vehicle, the driver and the pace are yours alone, which means you can linger somewhere that captivates you (this happens often in the Fes medina) or start earlier to beat the midday heat.

Best Time to Go

The best time for this tour is spring (March-May) or autumn (September-November), when temperatures are comfortable for long walks through the medinas. Casablanca and Rabat, both on the Atlantic coast, enjoy a mild climate year-round thanks to the ocean breeze, but Fes and Meknes, further inland, can exceed 38°C (100°F) in the summer months (June-August), making midday sightseeing tiring. Winter (December-February) is mild but wetter in the north, so pack a light rain jacket if traveling then.

Temperatures by City

The Atlantic coast (Casablanca and Rabat) is the outlier here: it rarely gets uncomfortably hot even in August, which makes day three a natural break from the heat if you’re traveling in summer.

Difficulty Level

This tour is rated easy, but it isn’t effort-free: the medinas of Marrakech and especially Fes are a maze of cobblestone alleys, often with uneven steps and no vehicle access, so you’ll walk a fair amount (up to 3-4 km/day in the old towns). It suits nearly all ages, including families with children and fit senior travelers, but is less suitable for travelers with mobility limitations given the uneven terrain of the historic medinas.

What to Pack

Beyond comfortable, closed walking shoes (essential on the cobblestones), bring clothing that covers your shoulders and knees for visits to mosque exteriors and royal mausoleums, where modest dress is expected. One useful fact: the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca is one of the very few mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors, via scheduled guided tours of the interior — it’s the only chance on this tour to see inside a working Islamic place of worship, so dress accordingly that day. Also bring cash in Moroccan dirhams for monument entrance fees (cards often aren’t accepted) and a light layer for the evenings, which turn cooler especially in Fes and Meknes.

Pickup and Getting Around

Pickup is from the airport or your hotel in Marrakech on day one, and this is a one-way itinerary — you finish in Fes, not back in Marrakech, so plan your return flight (or ask us about a transfer back) accordingly. Because every stop is a city rather than a remote camp, days feel less like “driving days” than on our desert tours: the longest single drive is Marrakech to Casablanca on day three, and even that leaves the afternoon free for Rabat.

Money, Connectivity and Other Practicalities

Morocco’s currency is the dirham (MAD), a closed currency you can’t buy before arriving, so plan to withdraw or exchange after landing. Hotels and riads across all four cities generally accept cards, but museum and monument entrance fees are frequently cash-only, so keep dirhams on hand for the Hassan II Mosque, Volubilis, and smaller sites. Since this itinerary never leaves populated areas, WiFi and mobile signal are reliable throughout — one advantage of a route with no desert leg.
