The Perfect Desert Excursion for Travelers Short on Time
Not everyone has 3 days to spare for the Sahara in Merzouga. That’s why the Agafay Desert Day Trip has become one of the most requested experiences among visitors to Marrakech: in just a few hours you get the full Moroccan desert atmosphere, complete with camels, mint tea and a sunset that sets the Atlas Mountains ablaze.
Best time to go
Agafay works well almost year-round, and that’s one of its biggest advantages over a full Sahara trip. In summer (June-August), afternoon temperatures can climb past 40°C, which is why we schedule departure for late afternoon: you arrive once the harshest heat has passed and catch the best part of the day, sunset, in far more comfortable conditions. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) remain the most pleasant seasons overall, with clear skies and beautiful light for photos. Winter evenings can turn chilly, but dinner is served under heated tents.
Temperatures by Season
| Season | Marrakech & Agafay (day) | Agafay (evening) |
|---|---|---|
| Dec – Feb | 15–20°C | 5–10°C, heated tents at dinner |
| Mar – May | 22–28°C | 12–17°C |
| Jun – Aug | 32–40°C+ | 20–25°C |
| Sep – Nov | 24–29°C | 14–19°C |
Because Agafay sits at a similar elevation to Marrakech rather than deep in the Sahara, its evenings never get as cold as a night in Merzouga does — one more reason it works well even outside the ideal spring/autumn window.
Is this for you?
This excursion is built for travelers with limited time: a single free afternoon, a short city break in Marrakech, or families with young children for whom a full 3-day desert trip would be too long or tiring. It’s also a great choice for a romantic sunset without an 8-9 hour drive each way. One thing needs to be said clearly, since it’s the most common source of confusion among travelers: Agafay does not have the golden sand dunes you see in Sahara photos. It’s a rocky, hilly desert with an almost lunar character, quite different from the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga. If you’re dreaming of climbing a golden sand dune at sunset, our 3-day or 4-day luxury Merzouga tours are the right fit; if you want a taste of the desert atmosphere in just a few hours, Agafay is the ideal experience.
What to pack
Comfortable, layered clothing is best: it can be warm during the day, but the temperature drops quickly once the sun sets, especially in winter. Closed, comfortable shoes help on the rocky terrain, along with sunglasses and a camera for sunset shots. If you add the quad biking supplement, bring a light scarf or bandana to protect against dust kicked up by the vehicles.
How it differs from our Merzouga Sahara tours
Agafay and Merzouga are complementary experiences, not interchangeable ones. Agafay is just 45 minutes from Marrakech, runs as a half-day or evening excursion, and is a rocky, gravel desert at the foot of the High Atlas. Our Merzouga tours (3 days or the 4-day luxury version) instead require an 8-9 hour drive each way, but reward you with the genuine golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, rising up to 150 meters, and at least one real night in the heart of the Sahara. Think of Agafay as the ideal taster for travelers short on time, and Merzouga as the full experience for those who want to live the Sahara desert in its most authentic form.
Pickup and Money
Pickup is from your hotel or riad in Marrakech, with the exact time confirmed the day before based on sunset — since the whole point of the late-afternoon departure is timing the camel ride and dinner around it. Morocco’s currency is the dirham (MAD); the welcome tea and dinner are prepaid and included, but bring cash for the quad biking supplement, any extra drinks, and tips, since cards aren’t really an option once you’re out at the camp.
A practical tip
Book the afternoon departure well in advance during peak season (March-May and September-November): it’s the most requested slot because it guarantees the most spectacular sunset, and camp seating is limited.
