Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) remain the most pleasant seasons overall, with clear skies and beautiful light for photos. Winter evenings can turn chilly, but dinner is served under heated tents.

Temperatures by Season

Because Agafay sits at a similar elevation to Marrakech rather than deep in the Sahara, its evenings never get as cold as a night in Merzouga does — one more reason it works well even outside the ideal spring/autumn window.

One thing needs to be said clearly, since it’s the most common source of confusion among travelers: Agafay does not have the golden sand dunes you see in Sahara photos. It’s a rocky, hilly desert with an almost lunar character, quite different from the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga. What to pack

Comfortable, layered clothing is best: it can be warm during the day, but the temperature drops quickly once the sun sets, especially in winter. Closed, comfortable shoes help on the rocky terrain, along with sunglasses and a camera for sunset shots. If you add the quad biking supplement, bring a light scarf or bandana to protect against dust kicked up by the vehicles.

Agafay and Merzouga are complementary experiences, not interchangeable ones. Agafay is just 45 minutes from Marrakech, runs as a half-day or evening excursion, and is a rocky, gravel desert at the foot of the High Atlas. Pickup and Money

Pickup is from your hotel or riad in Marrakech, with the exact time confirmed the day before based on sunset — since the whole point of the late-afternoon departure is timing the camel ride and dinner around it. Morocco’s currency is the dirham (MAD); the welcome tea and dinner are prepaid and included, but bring cash for the quad biking supplement, any extra drinks, and tips, since cards aren’t really an option once you’re out at the camp.

A practical tip

Book the afternoon departure well in advance during peak season (March-May and September-November): it’s the most requested slot because it guarantees the most spectacular sunset, and camp seating is limited.
